Insta-user, I'm an Instagram junkie

I'm an Instagram junkie. I absolutely love it.

I use it for my personal use, my dog Gatsby has an Instagram account and I use Instagram for work.

You can use it just for photos or you can use it as an interaction between writers and readers by creating contests (which is something I am still struggling here with at The Reporter.)

There is something about pictures that words can not express. Being a journalist, I think I do a great job telling a story/painting an image in the readers head as they read the text.

But when I look through my camera (to be specific my iPhone4), the world is completely different.

This week I spoke with Ashley Campbell, online and community engagement editor at The Times Herald,  and I encouraged her to have her writers create an Instagram account and use it while covering events/breaking news. Readers love to read, but they also love to see.

After taking all these photos I use Storify which lets me use all of the photos I have captured and create a story.

I really think Instagram is something all journos/writers should consider. Pictures tell an amazing story, sometimes more than the wise words you type.

Last week's carnival in Upper Gwynedd Township is an example of where I think Instagram BLOWS AWAY my story that was in print on Sunday. Take a look at let me know what you think. Enjoy :)

Instawalk around town

As community engagement editors here at Digital First Media Group (DFM), we are often tossing around ideas to each other to produce content. It's pretty awesome because we have a Google group where we bounce things around. The topic of Instagram came about and being that I am a huge fan, I thought this was genius by a Santa Cruz paper. I would love to do something like this in the Lansdale area, whether it be just on Main Street or even Souderton's Main Street. I think it would be awesome to see the creative work/ideas people have. Would anyone be interested in something like this?? I am hoping to get four people together, this SATURDAY to participate at the Lansdale Farmers' market. Feel free to leave me a comment on here or on my Facebook page. Check out what they did in Santa Cruz (boy do I wish I lived out there...). Would be doing the same idea here.

What did I get myself into??

I'ts been 22 days since taking on the role of Community Engagement Editor here at The Reporter and I could not be more excited about how it has been going and what the future holds ahead.

As a reporter I feel like I did a good job at "engaging" with the community via social media but my new role now allows me to take things to the next step -- allowing me to show my creative side, learn from some of the best social media savoy individuals in the country, while also filling the shoes of the editor before me who taught me lots, Andy Stettler.

I've done my fair share of Storify-ing over the last (almost) month and I know I'm going to continue to do so. I can't wait to see what the future (and social media future) has to hold. I can't wait to build relationships, have the community share ideas with me and really think outside the box.

As I say above, the possibilities are endless! And I can't wait to tackle them all!

Can't wait to share with you all tomorrow my next project I have in mind :)
